Why does nobody warn you about the light at the 5th Ave salon making blondes look green
I was finishing a level 9 ash blonde at my booth in Portland last Thursday and my client gasped at the mirror because the overhead fluorescents turned her whole head a sickly swamp green, so now I drag a clip-on ring light to every station I rent and re-check toners under it before I rinse, has anyone else had a chair spot that flat out lies to you about color?
Oh man, those flat fluorescent panels are the worst for color checking. They spike hard in the green range and make any ash or cool tone look straight up swampy, especially around level 8 to 10. What saved me was getting a small daylight clip light and checking the hair under it before I rinse, plus one more look by a window if the salon has one. Here is the trick though, the mismatch is not your formula, it is the room lying to you, so trust the daylight check over the mirror every time. I also keep a swatch ring of my usual ash tones and hold it up under each light so I can see how far off that station is before I even start. If your landlord will not swap the bulbs, ask about the color temp on them because a 4000K tube reads way greener than a 2700K one. Do you move your light around or just park it at one station?
