A 30 year guy told me to bump my swing brake up a notch on the 60 ton, and it stopped my load from drifting
Now my buddy says slower braking just wears the shoes out faster and you should learn to feather it by hand instead. Who's right here, because I've been doing it both ways and can't tell which one is actually better on the machine?
That buddy's feathering idea makes more sense on paper, less drag on the drum means the shoes aren't fighting the load every time you stop. But feathering by hand all day means you're the brake, and one tired afternoon you'll slip and dump the load anyway.
