Had a beer with a retired operator who said he never lifted a load without checking his rigging twice, even if it was the same setup from yesterday.

That's a solid rule. My version is checking my coffee maker twice before leaving the house, because one time I almost flooded the kitchen. Some habits just save you from a bad day.
