Had a main hoist brake start slipping on a 40-ton job in Dallas this morning.

Caught it on the first lift when the load wouldn't hold. Anyone got a good method for checking those before a shift besides just the usual test?

Check the manual for a static load test procedure? Might catch a weak brake before it's under real stress.

Read the manual for that? Seems like overkill for a simple brake check. Most guys just listen for weird sounds and feel for pull during a slow roll. How often does a static test actually find something a road test wouldn't?
