I finally understood why my old foreman was so picky about boom angles
I was setting up for a pick last Tuesday down at the Port of Wilmington and heard this young guy on the radio bragging about how he never uses the chart anymore. My foreman from years back popped into my head, this guy named Pete who would yell at us if we were even half a degree off. Pete was a grumpy dude but he never had a close call, not one. The young guy's boom ended up flexing way more than he expected and he had to reset. Has anyone else had an old timer's nagging voice save them from a mess?

Yeah that Pete sounds a lot like my old supervisor Frank. He'd walk around with this beat up clipboard and if your load line wasn't exactly vertical he'd make you start over. I remember one time we were rushing to get a crane out of the way and I tried to shortcut the angle. Frank came over and just pointed at the boom without saying a word. Sure enough that next pick the load started swinging like crazy. I still hear him in my head every time I go to set the angle.

Still hear my dad's voice every time I nearly drop a wrench.
