Old timer told me to stop leveling the boom with the brake on

Honestly, I always kept the brake on when leveling the boom because I thought it was safer. Last week a 30-year vet showed me how it's smoother and faster if you release the brake halfway and use the friction to feather it. Has anyone else tried this approach or do you still keep the brake locked?

Man that old timer sounds like he knew his stuff, I'm gonna try that trick tomorrow for sure.

I saw a forum post last year where a guy swore by using the brake friction too. He said it gives you way more control for fine adjustments.
