Showerthought: I switched from hand signals to radios after a near miss in Chicago and I'm never going back
For 12 years I ran every pick with hand signals and thought radios were for guys who couldn't read a load. Then last March I was booming down on a 40 foot steel beam in Chicago and my signalman looked away for maybe two seconds. I stopped the load about 6 feet from a crew guy who had walked under it. That night I bought a pair of cheap two-way radios for $60. Now I run every blind pick with a radio and a spotter, and the only time I use hand signals is when the battery dies. Anyone else made the switch, or do you still trust a guy waving his arms 100 feet away?
