TIL skipping the swing brake check on my old 40-ton actually cost more than doing it
My old lead hand at a yard in Newark always chewed me out for testing the swing brake before a pick, and I figured he was just wasting 5 minutes every morning for no reason. So last month on a precast panel job I skipped it for a whole week to save time, and on day 5 the brake grabbed late and I drifted about a foot past my tag line guy. No injury, but it rattled me bad, and I went back to the full check every single day after that. The funny part is that five minutes I thought was wasted would have caught a leaking seal that took $400 and a half day to fix. Has anyone else had a brake or clutch act up just enough to notice, but not enough to fail outright?
