Spent $85 on a "certified" data recovery tool that deleted my photos instead

Last month I bought a USB stick that claimed it could pull files off a dead laptop, but the software turned out to be a rebranded disk wiper and it erased the only copy of my kid's birthday video. After 3 tries on a spare drive it did the same thing, so I checked the forum and found 40 other people with the same story. Has anyone else lost data to one of those cheap recovery gadgets, and what actually worked for you without spending hundreds?
