Clear coat on matte prints, everyone says no but my test said yes
Went to a print shop meetup in Portland last Tuesday and this guy was going on and on about how you should never put clear coat over matte finish vinyl. Said it ruins the texture, muddies the colors, all that. I sat there nodding but honestly I ran a test last month with some leftover matte stock and a cheap spray clear coat from Home Depot. Did three panels, waited 48 hours, checked under a loupe. The coated one actually held the ink better when I scratched it with a fingernail, and the matte look barely changed. The uncoated one smudged just from handling. I get that in theory the chemistry should be different, but has anyone else actually tried this with a top coat meant for paper, not plastic? What did you see on yours?
