I used the same password for 10 years until my bank called me

Last month my bank flagged a login attempt from Nigeria at 3 AM. I had been using 'fluffycat2005' for everything - email, Netflix, even my work VPN. Has anyone else had that wake up call where you realize how lazy you've been with passwords?

Hold on, I gotta push back on this a little! I've been using the same main password since like 2008 and never had a single problem. All this "change your password every month" stuff is just the security companies trying to scare you into buying their software. My password is "soccerfan99" and I use it for my bank, my email, my Amazon account, and my kid's school portal. If anything, having one password forces me to be more careful about where I type it in. You had one bad login flag and now you're acting like the sky is falling.

and honestly michael880, you kinda just proved my point without meaning to. "soccerfan99" is probably in every password list from the last ten years of data breaches. i get that it seems like fear mongering but the reality is if one of those sites you use gets hacked, now someone has your email and that password, then they try it everywhere else. it's not about changing every month, it's about not using the same key for your house, your car, and your kid's school locker.
