Just crossed 10,000 blocked login attempts on my home server firewall
I set up a small home server a few months ago to host my personal file backups and a photo gallery. Last week I checked the firewall logs out of curiosity and saw it blocked over 10,000 login attempts from random IP addresses globally. That number really surprised me because I live in a quiet neighborhood and didn't think anyone would bother poking at my little box. Most of the attempts came from servers in China and Russia trying common usernames like admin and root. It made me realize how even a small setup gets constant scanning from bots. Has anyone else looked at their firewall logs and been shocked by the volume of traffic?

And here I was thinking my little server in the suburbs was invisible. @hernandez.jordan nailed it with that door handle analogy, because honestly I used to think if you weren't a big company or government site nobody would bother trying to break in. Now I see the logs and it's like bots are just systematically trying every door on the block whether it's a mansion or a garden shed. Makes me feel a lot better about having that firewall set up even if I barely touched it for months.

It's wild how the internet basically treats every IP address like a door to try kicking in. Kinda makes you wonder if we're all just living in one giant digital neighborhood where the houses have no fences and everyone walks around jiggling handles.
