Overheard my neighbor say phishing emails only work on 'dumb people', so I showed him last month's FBI cyber crime report where 3,000 small businesses got hit

The report had a quote from a CEO who lost $180,000 to a spear phishing attack that looked like it came from his own boss, and that made me realize even smart folks can get caught if the email is personal enough. Has anyone else dealt with a close call from a targeted phish that almost got you?

Brooke's right, targeted stuff hits different. My dumbest moment was nearly clicking a fake Office 365 login that mentioned a project I'd literally just started with a vendor. The email knew the vendor's name, the project codename, everything. I had my mouse hovering over the link and only stopped because I got a random text from my kid asking about dinner. That's not skill, that's pure luck and a hungry teenager. These scammers are basically stalkers with a keyboard, and any of us can slip up when the bait is that personal.

Targeted emails are getting scary smart and personal nowadays, everyone has a weak spot.
