Question about a simple way to stop spam calls

I was getting 10 junk calls a day until I started answering and immediately putting the phone on mute. They hang up after 5 seconds of silence and my number gets flagged as dead, so the calls dropped by half in a week. Has anyone else found a quiet trick that actually works?

Honestly, the whole spam call thing makes me miss landlines sometimes. My grandma still has one, and her answering machine message is just her yelling "We're not home!" in this really loud voice. It's kind of amazing, and I swear she gets way fewer junk calls than I do. Makes you wonder if a confused old person recording throws off their systems more than silence does.

Wait, does the mute trick really flag your number as dead? I mean, I tried that for a while and the calls just kept coming from different numbers. Maybe it works on some systems, but a lot of these are just bots that dial and don't even listen until someone talks. I had better luck just never answering anything not in my contacts. It's annoying but they slowly gave up.
