Starbucks wifi got me thinking about public network risks

I was at a Starbucks in Tampa last weekend revising my resume and realized I had no idea if anyone could see what I was doing. Started looking into VPNs after that and now I never use free wifi without one. How do you guys handle public networks?

My neighbor Dave used to think "encryption" was a type of car wax, so I'm way ahead of him just knowing the basics. Honestly, I figure if someone's bored enough to watch me edit my resume on Starbucks wifi, they probably need a hobby more than I need to worry. But yeah, I still use a VPN anyway, mostly so I feel like a spy for about five minutes before opening my email.

Oh wait, VPNs don't actually make you completely invisible on public wifi though? They just encrypt the traffic between you and the VPN server, so anyone on the same network can't see what sites you're visiting but they can still see you're using a VPN. Just something I learned after getting one myself.
