Vent: Spent 6 hours fixing a simple DNS issue that was hiding in plain sight

Last week I noticed my home network in Austin was getting weird timeouts on certain sites. I checked everything - firewall rules, router settings, even swapped out the ethernet cable from my modem. Turns out my router had a manual DNS entry from 2 years ago pointing to a dead server. Changed it to 8.8.8.8 and it worked instantly. Has anyone else wasted a whole afternoon on something this dumb?

Second router acting as backup would have caught that immediately.

Read somewhere that some folks run their backup router on a cheap cellular plan just for that exact scenario. Saves you from having to scramble when the main one goes down.
