Vent: That one comment on my old blog post that completely changed how I handle backups
Back in 2018 I had a Geocities-style tutorial about organizing digital photos and someone named@techmom42 commented 'youre gonna lose everything if you don't have an offsite copy.' I ignored it for like 2 years until my external drive failed and I lost 12,000 vacation pics from trips to Seattle and Portland. Now I run three backups including a cheap cloud service and I actually test them every 3 months. Anyone else have a random stranger's feedback that saved your butt way later?

Oh man, talk about a wake-up call! I had something similar happen but it was some random Reddit thread about "cloud storage is cheaper than your regrets" and I kept thinking "pfft, my external drive is fine." Then my cat knocked that drive off my desk and it made a noise I can only describe as a mechanical death rattle. Now I've got my photos scattered across Google Drive, a tiny Backblaze subscription, and a dusty external drive I only touch during my quarterly "let's see if stuff still works" panic sessions.
