A security guard at the old Northgate Mall totally changed how I explore these places

I was taking a picture of a completely empty fountain court last month, and a guard came over to chat. He told me they've had a real problem with people trying to sneak into the closed anchor stores at night. Now I always make a point to say hello to any staff I see and let them know I'm just there to look around. It makes the whole trip less sketchy for everyone. Do you guys usually check in with security when you visit a place that's still partially open?

That old mall's security probably sees a dozen different stories every shift.

My local library has a similar vibe with the staff. A quick hello at the desk makes them less likely to watch me like a hawk while I browse. It's just a good habit for any semi-public space now.
