Am I the only one who started checking the food court first?
I used to wander for hours looking for signs of life, but now I head straight for the old Sbarro or Orange Julius. If the pizza oven is cold and the fountain drinks are off, you know the whole place is basically a ghost town. Anyone else have a specific spot they check to gauge how dead a mall really is?

Man, it's just a mall, not a weather forecast.

Right? The Westgate Mall near me does the same thing. They have these huge signs with flashing warnings about "inclement weather" when it's just drizzling outside. It makes grabbing a coffee feel like preparing for a hurricane. They treat a little rain like it's a full-blown emergency.

What about the smell? A truly dead mall has this weird, stale air that hits you before you even see the empty food court. It smells like old carpet and quiet. If the air smells clean or like pretzels, there's still a pulse.
