Can we talk about the ethics of taking 'souvenirs' from a dead mall?

I pocketed a loose tile from the floor of the old Sunrise Galleria food court in Phoenix, but now I'm split between seeing it as preserving a piece of history and just plain stealing from a place that's already down.

My buddy grabbed a menu from a closed diner and still feels weird about it.

The diner on 8th Street that closed last month had a lockbox on the door. That menu was basically behind a barrier. Taking something from a sealed-up building is a whole different thing than picking up a free flyer. That's not a souvenir, that's just taking stuff. No wonder he feels weird.
