That whole 'malls are dying because of Amazon' take feels too simple to me

I was down at the Meriden Square Mall last weekend taking photos and overheard this teenager telling his friend that malls are dead because of online shopping. But I've been going to this place for 25 years and the real problem is local management letting the place rot. The fountain has been dry since 2018 and they blocked off the escalator instead of fixing it. Does anyone else think the actual stores and upkeep matter way more than the internet?

The Meriden Square had 40% vacancy before Amazon even got big in Connecticut. I remember walking through there in 2010 and half the stores were already gone. People blame Bezos but really the landlords just stopped trying after the 2008 crash.

Read an article saying mismanagement is actually a bigger factor than people realize. That dead fountain sounds exactly like the kind of thing that pushes shoppers away, not Amazon.
