Got nostalgic and dug out my old iPod classic... bricked it in 10 minutes

Tried plugging it into a modern Windows 11 laptop and the hard drive started clicking like crazy... apparently the old FireWire drivers are completely gone. Anybody know a workaround or is it truly dead tech now?

My buddy tried the same thing last week and ended up with a paperweight too. He found some old Windows 7 laptop at a thrift store and it worked fine with that. Ever tried a virtual machine with an older OS?

My dad actually kept his old Dell from 2005 running Windows XP just for this. He drags it out every few months to flash some old BIOS firmware for his 3D printer. It's crazy how those old machines are still useful for stuff like that. I'd rather hunt for a cheap used laptop than mess with virtual machines honestly. The hardware compatibility is just way more reliable when you need to connect something directly via USB.
