Just passed 1,000 dead links on my old Geocities archive project

I've been scraping old Geocities pages for like 3 years now, and I finally hit 1,000 dead links in my personal archive. It's wild how many of those sites from 1997 just had broken image tags and missing midi files. Makes me wonder how much random internet history is just gone forever now. Anyone else ever try to recover stuff from old hosting services?

Actually, letting dead links die is probably the best thing for the web. Nobody needs to see those terrible animated GIFs and auto-playing MIDI files from 1997, the internet has evolved past that cringe era. All that old content was hosted on servers held together with tape and luck anyway, so the cleanup is doing everyone a favor.

Wait, you actually think losing those hand-coded shrines to dial-up era creativity is a good thing?
