PSA: My 2003 iPod with a dead hard drive is now a very expensive paperweight
Was digging through my old desk drawer last weekend and found my old 3rd gen iPod. White casing, four buttons at the top, the whole deal. Plugged it in hoping to hear some nostalgic clicks. Instead got the dreaded folder icon with the exclamation mark. Hard drive finally gave up after 22 years. Tried the old "give it a gentle spin" trick but no luck. Anyone have luck swapping out those old hard drives with compact flash adapters? Or is this thing just destined for a shelf?

My buddy Mike did the CF card swap on a 4th gen last year and said it was way easier than he expected. He got everything off Amazon for like 30 bucks and the thing boots up faster than his phone now.

Oh dude I've done this exact swap on a 3rd gen. The iFlash adapter and a 64gb CF card works perfectly, just need a small screwdriver set and some patience with the ribbon cable. Took me maybe 20 minutes and it's been running for like 3 years now with no issues.
