Had a guy at the truck stop in Bakersfield ask me to check his oil with the engine running
He was fueling his old Freightliner and just wanted a quick look. I told him to shut it off, and he seemed genuinely surprised, saying his last mechanic always checked it hot and running. We let it sit for a minute, and the dipstick read a full quart low. Makes you wonder how many rigs are out there running on bad info. How do you guys handle quick checks for drivers who aren't mechanics?

Always shut it off. That's how you get a real reading.

Totally agree, it's the only way. I left mine on once and the numbers were way off. The machine needs a full reset to measure right. You get a false sense of how much you're actually using. Now I make sure it's completely dead before plugging it back in. The reading is way more accurate that way.
