Hot take: Saying no to cat converter swaps on diesels is getting tough
A buddy who runs a hauling business asked me to swap his truck's catalytic converter for a straight pipe to avoid future repairs. I know it boosts power and saves him money, but it also breaks clean air rules. Part of me wants to help a friend, part says it's wrong. How do you handle these requests?

Does your buddy even get why those clean air rules exist in the first place?

Actually, it reminds me of when my favorite diner almost shut down over some safety code. The rule made sense but the fix cost a ton, and it felt like they were getting punished for being old. Robert Gonzalez90 is right that the tension between good rules and real costs gets messy fast.

Honestly piper_nelson, he gets the why but sees the real cost for small shops. Tbh the rules can be good but still feel impossible for some owners to follow. Ngl shouldn't the goal be clean air without killing local business?
