I still think glow plugs are overrated on older Cummins engines...
Had a guy tell me last week I was crazy for not replacing all six on my '96 12 valve. I've run that truck for 8 years now and only swapped two of them. Fires up fine down to about 20 degrees with a good battery and a little ether. Maybe I'm just lucky but I feel like people replace them in sets way too often. Anyone else stick with the originals longer than you're supposed to?

Read a writeup from a diesel shop that said most 12 valves don't even need all six swapped unless you're in serious cold... they're really just for starting aid anyway.

Forty below zero in Red Deer last January, and my old Cummins still fired up on four out of six. The guy at the diesel shop told me straight up that swapping all six is just throwing money at a problem that don't exist for most people. He said those heaters are basically just there to get a little heat into the cylinder, not to turn the engine into a toaster oven. I laughed when he told me some guys swap em out every year for no reason at all.
