Lost a full day's pay on a stubborn injector because I skipped the basic test first

Had a 6.7 Powerstroke with a rough idle, and I jumped straight to pulling the injectors thinking it was a bad spray pattern. Turns out the whole issue was a $20 glow plug module, and I wasted 8 hours of labor I can't bill for. What's the most basic check you always do now before you start pulling parts?

Check for codes before you even touch a wrench.

@garcia.charles has a point, but you skipped a glow plug check?
