That moment my injector cup tool slipped and cost me 4 hours on a 6.7 Powerstroke

I was working on a 2015 F-250 out in Charlotte last Tuesday, pulling the injectors on a 6.7 Powerstroke. Everything was going smooth until I went to pop the cup out and my cheap tool slipped, cracking the cup lip. Ended up having to pull the whole fuel rail and soak the thing in PB Blaster for 2 hours before I could get a grip on it. Took me until 7 PM to get it back together, way past my quoted time. Has anyone else had luck with those OTC injector cup pullers or should I just bite the bullet on a better set?

You ever try using a ratchet strap to hold the tool steady? Works in a pinch.

Man, that line about "my cheap tool slipped" hits home. That's the real killer right there. Nobody ever talks about how much time you lose not just fixing the screw up but also the mental reset. You're already four hours deep and you know you're eating that time for free. I'll say this though, that PB Blaster soak is a band aid for the real problem. The OTC stuff is okay for occasional use but if you're doing these more than once a quarter you're wasting money on time. I switched to a Snap On puller after my second slip and it paid for itself in the first job. Not saying you need Snap On but those cheap kits are designed for perfect scenarios only. The tolerance on the cups varies between brands too. Some are just machined tighter than others. Also a tip nobody told me early on. Hit the area around the cup with a heat gun for 30 seconds before you pull. Not enough to melt anything but enough to expand the aluminum just a tiny bit. Makes the cup come out like butter. Saves you from that 2 hour PB Blaster wait.
