Appreciation post: Finally finished a 3-month digital portrait project last night

After 30+ layers and two complete do-overs on the lighting, I finally rendered a portrait of my grandmother that actually looks like her, and my husband said 'that's her' instead of just nodding politely.

...and here I am proud when I manage to draw a stick figure that doesn't look like it's had a stroke. 30 layers? I get overwhelmed at three and start merging them out of panic. But seriously, that moment when someone actually recognizes who you painted without you having to say "it's supposed to be Grandma" is like winning the art lottery. My husband just says "cool" and then asks what's for dinner.

30 layers is just lazy and hiding bad decisions behind complexity.
