Can we talk about the old DeviantArt critique system?

I was digging through my old hard drive last night and found a screenshot of a critique I got back in 2008, where someone spent 15 minutes writing line by line feedback on my digital painting. Really made me miss how the community used to interact. Now it feels like everyone just drops a "nice work" emoji and moves on. Does anyone else remember when people actually wrote out detailed tips on shading and composition?

Actually, the old system had some MAJOR flaws too. Back then, you'd sometimes get feedback that was just someone ripping your piece apart without any real understanding of what you were going for. I think the current setup is more welcoming for beginners who would have been scared off by harsh line-by-line critiques. Those detailed breakdowns were great sometimes, but they also made the site feel pretty exclusive.

Yeah, that's a good point... "just someone ripping your piece apart" really hit home for me. I've had that happen too and it can totally kill the motivation to keep writing.
