Found a 5 year gap in my art style last night and it shocked me

I was going through my hard drive looking for an old commission file and stumbled on a piece I did in 2019. That same night I had just finished a new character portrait. I stacked them side by side and the difference was way bigger than I expected. My 2019 version had flat shading and no focal point lighting at all. Now I saturate a single light source and use about 3 layers of ambient shadow. The same pose took me 4 hours back then and now takes me about 1.5 hours with way more detail. What kind of timeframe did you see your biggest jump in skill?

Honestly I used to think progress was just gradual but seeing photos side by side really changes your mind on that.

Yeah those side by sides really hit different.
