That $80 external drive I bought 6 years ago finally paid itself off

I finally went through my old backup drives last weekend and found one I bought back in 2018 for about $80. It had 2TB of space and I just used it to dump old game mods, screenshots, and random PDFs I swore I'd read. Well, my laptop crashed three weeks ago and I lost everything on it. I remembered the drive sitting in my closet and plugged it in, and most of my stuff was still there. It saved my butt on a bunch of project files and photos I thought were gone for good. Now I'm wondering if I should buy a second one for redundancy or if I'm just gonna end up with another pile of digital junk. Has anyone else had an old drive come through for them like that?

You ever have one of those moments where you realize a $80 bet paid off way more than you expected? Same thing happened to me a couple years back with an old external I'd forgotten about. Bought it for school stuff in 2014 and left it in a drawer for almost a decade. When my main computer's hard drive went kaput, that old drive had a full backup of my tax returns and family photos from 2015 to 2018. Felt like finding a twenty in a jacket pocket, except it was way more valuable. And yeah, I'd say go for a second one for redundancy. Better to have two piles of digital junk than one crash that wipes you clean.
