Chat with a van dweller in Santa Fe made me rethink my whole setup

She told me she spends $0 on accommodation because she just parks on BLM land and uses a solar panel she got for $150 on Craigslist, and now I'm wondering if I should ditch my Airbnb habit for a cargo van conversion.

Built out a cargo van last spring myself. Best decision I ever made for traveling. The freedom to just pull over anywhere and crash is huge. It saves a ton of money every month compared to hotels or Airbnb. You learn real quick what you actually need when your whole space is a van.

The whole "learn what you actually need" part is so real. When I did my build, I went way overboard on storage at first, then realized half of it just collected dust. What worked for me was keeping a foldable table and a small camp stove, then storing the rest in clear bins under the bed. I also mounted a power strip with USB ports right by the door so I could charge stuff without crawling around. Honestly, the best thing I did was leave a window open for airflow at night, blackout curtains made a huge difference for sleeping anywhere.
