My coworker told me my Zoom background made me look like a hostage

I work remote from hostels in Southeast Asia and for months my background was just a blank white wall with a single sad lamp. Then during a client call this girl in a coworking space in Chiang Mai messaged me saying I looked like someone from a missing person poster. At first I laughed but then I realized she was kind of right. So I found a coffee shop with plants and actual natural light for my calls. Now I even bought a cheap ring light from a shop near the night market for like 15 bucks. Clients actually seem more relaxed talking to me now. Has anyone else gotten brutally honest feedback about their setup that actually helped?

The ring light probably makes you look like you're in a police lineup, not a coffee shop.

The ring light thing is such a good point though. Idk maybe it's just me but that harsh white light really does make everything look super flat and unflattering if you're not careful. It washes out all the natural shadows that make a coffee shop feel cozy and warm. I mean a barista would never look at you under that kind of light unless they were interrogating you or something lol. You'd be way better off with a warm lamp or just natural window light if you're trying to get that chill vibe. Makes a huge difference in how the photo feels, not just how you look.
