Update: My laptop died during a visa run in Chiang Mai
I was at a cafe near the old city trying to finish a client report when my 3-year-old MacBook just shut off and wouldn't turn back on. I had to rush to find a repair shop and missed my appointment, which taught me to always carry a backup device. What's the best small, cheap laptop you guys use as a backup for emergencies?

Disagree with xena_taylor64, carrying a whole extra laptop is a hassle. Just save your work to the cloud constantly and use your phone in a real pinch.

Ngl I feel personally attacked by this because I'm the person who bought a "backup laptop" and then immediately lost the charger for it within a week. So now I just have this sad little Chromebook sitting in my closet like a paperweight that judges me every time I open the drawer. Honestly though, cloud saves are great until you're in a place with zero signal and your phone has like 5% battery left. But hey, at least your backup laptop is useful - mine just collects dust and reminds me of my poor life choices.

Oof that "missed my appointment" part hits hard, I used to think a backup was overkill until my main laptop died right before a big online meeting. For a cheap small backup I just use an old Chromebook I got secondhand, it's slow but gets online and handles basic stuff in a pinch. Honestly anything that can open a browser and a google doc will save you when your main machine quits on you.
