Used to book hostels two weeks ahead, now I roll in day of

Back in 2019 I had every night booked for three months across Thailand. Then I got stuck in a guesthouse in Chiang Mai that looked nothing like the photos, paid $45 a night for a moldy room. After that I switched to just showing up and scouting places in person. Now I book same day, saved like 30% on rooms and found way cooler spots. Anyone else ditch advance planning for the fly by night approach?

Honestly, "looked nothing like the photos" is the story of my life with hostels. I've had the exact same experience, that $45 moldy room nightmare sticks with you. Now I just wander around a new city and pick a place based on the actual vibe, not some filtered Instagram post. It feels way more freeing and you usually find a hidden gem that way. Can't beat saving 30% either, that's like two extra street food meals.

$45 for a moldy room? Man, that's brutal, I'd be done with planning too after that. That's like a whole week of pad thai money wasted on a room that needs a hazmat suit. @brooke533, you're telling me you paid premium dollar for what sounds like a biohazard site, that's just wild.
