Bought a $300 moisture meter before redoing my bathroom floor

I used to just guess if a subfloor was dry enough, but after a bad patch job in my old house, I got a Protimeter Surveymaster. It showed a wet spot under the toilet flange I never would have found. That one tool saved me from laying new tile over a future mold problem. Anyone have a favorite trick for checking subfloors without tearing things up first?

That's smart, finding that wet spot under the flange! For a quick check before I had a meter, I'd tape a big square of clear plastic sheeting right to the subfloor. Leave it for a full day, then peel it up. If the wood under it looks darker or feels damp, you've got moisture coming up from below. It's not perfect, but it's a decent free test for big problems.

That plastic trick can work, @the_cora, but it needs way more than just a day to be sure.

Man, I feel you on the plastic trick, it's saved me a few times too.
