Just realized my old way of hanging shelves was a total joke

For years I'd just eyeball it, hold a shelf up, and drive a nail into the drywall, which led to my 'art gallery' of lopsided shelves in the old apartment. The final straw was a 4-foot oak board crashing down at 2 AM last winter because I hit nothing but air behind the wall. Does anyone actually use a stud finder for small stuff, or is that overkill?

Oh man, I feel that pain. A stud finder is definitely not overkill, it just saves you from that exact 2 AM disaster. Trust me, the five seconds it takes is worth it.
