My uncle insisted on using a 2x6 for a deck joist and I should have listened

I built a small deck off my kitchen last spring and planned to use 2x8s for the joists. My uncle, who built houses for 30 years, told me to use 2x6s instead to save money, saying the span was short enough. I went with the 2x8s anyway, thinking bigger was better. Now the deck feels way too stiff and bouncy, and I spent about $80 more on lumber for no good reason. Has anyone else had a family member give you simple building advice that turned out to be spot on?

Ever think more lumber always meant a better build? I learned the hard way too, overbuilding a shed and wasting cash.

My contractor buddy says overbuilding can actually make things feel worse.
