Serious question, are smart thermostats really worth the trouble?
I dropped about $250 on a fancy one last fall and the constant software updates and connectivity drops have been a headache. My old programmable unit was less than $50 and just worked for a decade. Anyone else find these things more trouble than they save?

Read an article last year that said a lot of the promised energy savings depend on your house layout and your actual schedule. The constant fiddling with an app to fix connection problems can cancel out any convenience. My neighbor had to reset his twice last winter when it just stopped talking to the heat pump. Seems like the simpler models might be the sweet spot for reliability.
