Shoutout to the guy at the hardware store in Madison who told me to just use a $2 putty knife for grout cleanup.

What hack did you use? I always keep a spray bottle of soapy water handy for sliding tiles around.

Actually spraying soapy water is genius for tile work (I learned that the hard way after fighting with a stubborn backsplash). The secret is adding a tiny squirt of dish soap to a spray bottle full of water, then misting the subfloor or thinset before you lay the tile down. It gives you like an extra 30 seconds of working time before the thinset starts grabbing, which is huge if you're trying to line up patterns or get those tricky cuts to sit flush. Another thing I do is keep a gentle water spray handy for when tiles start rocking, you just give them a little spritz and they slide right into place without messing up the surrounding ones. The combo of soap and water basically turns the thinset into temporary butter, you just gotta work fast before it sets up again.
