Unpopular opinion: I think those premade workbench kits are a waste of money

I was at a hardware store last weekend and overheard a guy telling his friend how a $400 workbench kit saved him time. In my experience, building your own from 2x4s and a sheet of plywood costs about $80 and lasts way longer. I built mine three years ago in my garage in Austin, and it's held up to me beating on it with hammers and stacking heavy tools on it. Those kits use thin particle board that warps after one humid summer. My buddy bought one and the top started sagging within 6 months. Has anyone else here gone the DIY route and felt like those pre-made benches are just overpriced and flimsy?

My own workbench is basically held together with regret and pocket screws, so I'm hardly one to judge. But yeah, those kits always seemed like paying extra for less wood.

Built mine from construction lumber five years ago. Still rock solid.
