Warning about the 'just add more caulk' advice for bathroom gaps

In my experience, if the gap around your tub is wider than a quarter inch, which I see all the time in houses built after 2000, caulk alone will just crack again in six months because the movement is too much, so you need to backer rod first, then caulk over it.

What about the type of caulk though? I've had way better luck with the silicone stuff labeled for kitchens and baths, it stays flexible longer. The cheap latex kind dries out and cracks no matter what you do.
