Chatting with my friend Sam about zines at the coffee shop yesterday really got me thinking.

She said she only makes zines about things that scare her a little, like her anxiety or a bad breakup. I've always stuck to safe topics like movie reviews. Hearing that made me realize I've been playing it too safe. Has anyone else started a personal zine that felt a bit risky to share?

Damn, that's a solid way to make a zine actually matter. I read an interview once where someone said if it doesn't make you a bit nervous to put it out there, it's probably not saying anything new. Your friend Sam has the right idea. Playing it safe just makes more noise nobody needs.

Totally agree with what thomasw48 said about playing it safe just adding to the noise. The best advice is to make the thing that would have helped you a year ago, even if it feels a little raw. That's how you actually connect with people instead of just adding more background static.
