Warning: Don't waste $60 on a glossy zine cover paper like I did

I bought a pack of glossy cardstock for my latest art zine thinking it'd look fancy, but the ink smudged everywhere after an hour of handling. Total loss of time and money - anyone else fall for the wrong paper type?

Oh man, that's a rough lesson. I learned the same way with a batch of inkjet prints on glossy paper back in the day. The problem is those coated papers need time to dry and set, and your fingers just ruin everything. For hand-made zines with lots of handling, I always go with a matte or uncoated cover stock now. A nice 80lb or 100lb text weight works well and doesn't smear after you touch it. If you really want that glossy look, try a matte paper with a clear spray sealant on top instead.

Changed my mind completely after reading @calebrivera's point about sealants.
