I finally color-coded my CAD layers and it clicked
I used to just throw everything on the default layer, which made editing a total mess. After a tough deadline, I spent an afternoon setting up layers by part type and giving each a distinct color. Now, I can pick out dimensions from mechanical parts at a glance. It feels so obvious, but it cut my revision time in half!

Did you ever think color-coding was a waste of time? I did until I tried it, and @jenniferwalker it CUT my work in half too!

But what if you waste more time organizing than actually getting stuff done?

That "waste more time" worry is real, but it's a one time cost. Spending an hour setting up a simple system saves you from losing ten minutes here and there every single day looking for things. The key is to keep the system stupid simple so it doesn't become its own job.
