Our crew hit a layer of clay while dredging the pond near my neighborhood, and it's slowing us down.

Any advice on how to break through clay more efficiently without damaging the equipment?

Try a high-pressure water jet first.

Honestly, I had the same thought until I tried Gray Gibson's water jet idea. It got the job done without needing the bigger tools. Saved me a ton of time in the end.
