PSA: I ran a 12-inch cutter head for a month on the Columbia River and then switched back to my old 10-inch.

The bigger head moved way more material but cost me an extra $800 in fuel over the same period, so what's the real trade-off for you guys between size and fuel burn on longer jobs?

Forget the fuel cost and look at the bigger picture. That extra material moved in a month probably saved you way more than $800 in labor and machine time. A faster job means you can take on another contract sooner, which makes that fuel burn look like a smart investment. Sometimes spending more to finish quicker is the real profit move.

That's like paying for express shipping to get a part for a broken machine back online faster.
