Showerthought: Work gear keeps popping up in backyard water jobs

Lately, I hear more guys talking about using small pumps or hoses from the yard for home stuff. For example, I helped a friend clear a clogged creek bed with a spare suction head. It moved the muck fast, no backbreaking digging. Another crew member redid his garden drainage using leftover pipe from a site. We just naturally think of these solutions from daily work. It's interesting how the job changes how we handle water at home. Maybe it's a sign we're always in operator mode, even off the clock.

Isn't this just folks using their skills, not some profound job mindset shift?

My old boss, a mechanic for 30 years, could hear a weird engine sound from across the shop and just know the exact bolt to check. I used to call it a good ear, but now I see it's a whole different way of looking at a car, not just a single skill. That's the real shift.

Yeah, the part about "always in operator mode" got me. I used to agree with @the_lily that it was just using skills. But seeing my neighbor flood his basement trying to fix a sump pump himself, then watching my coworker solve the same thing in an hour with a spare float switch... it's a different brain wiring. You just see water problems and solutions differently.
